African Wealth: Afrika's Billionaires

Despite centuries-old legacies of slavery, colonialism and apartheid; Africa continues to be the fastest growing powerhouse in the world. Indeed, Africa is the land of opportunities when it comes to wealth creation.


According to Forbes, “The number of billionaires in Africa--and the size of their fortunes--continues to drop. On this year's list, FORBES is only including African billionaires living in Africa, instead of featuring Africa's 50 richest people. There are 21 billionaires on this year’s list, worth a combined $70 billion. On the November 2015 Africa Rich List , there were 23 African billionaires worth a combined $79.8 billion. That in turn was down from 28 African billionaires in 2014.”

1. Aliko Dangote – $ 12.1 billion. Source of wealth: Cement, Flour, Sugar, Salt.

2. Nicky Oppenheimer – $ 7 billion. Source of wealth: De Beers, diamonds.

3. Johann Rupert – $6.2 billion.  Source of wealth: luxury goods.

4. Christoffel Wiese – $6.1 billion. Source of wealth: retailing, Shoprite

5. Mike Adenuga – $ 5.8 billion. Source of wealth: Telecom, oil etc.

6. Nassef Sawiris – 5.7 billion. Source of wealth: construction, chemicals.

7. Naguib Sawiris – $ 3.8 billion. Source of wealth: Telecom.

8. Isabel dos Santos – $ 3.2 billion. Source of wealth: Oil, investments.

9. Issad Rebrab – $3.1 billion.  Source of wealth: food.

10. Mohamed Mansour – $2.7 billion. Source of wealth: Diversified
